⚠️ When to Seek Immediate Emergency Care (Red Flags)

While epilepsy surgery is typically an elective procedure planned over time, certain seizure activities are medical emergencies that require immediate intervention to prevent brain damage or life-threatening complications.

Status Epilepticus

A seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, or multiple seizures without regaining consciousness in between. This is a life-threatening emergency.

First-Time Seizures

Any new-onset seizure in an adult requires urgent evaluation, especially if accompanied by confusion, fever, or a severe headache.

New Focal Deficits

Prolonged weakness, numbness, or inability to speak after a seizure (Todd's paralysis) that does not quickly resolve.

When is Epilepsy Surgery Considered?

Epilepsy surgery is considered when seizures are not adequately controlled with medications (drug-resistant epilepsy). Dr. Sayuj Krishnan works with a multidisciplinary team to evaluate patients and determine the best surgical approach for their specific condition.

The goal of epilepsy surgery is to reduce or eliminate seizures while preserving important brain functions, ultimately improving quality of life for patients and their families.

Surgical Procedures We Offer

Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT)

Minimally invasive laser ablation of epileptic focus using MRI-guided thermal therapy.

Benefits:

  • Minimal invasion
  • Precise targeting
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced complications

Best Suited For:

Deep-seated lesions, small epileptic foci

Resection Surgery

Surgical removal of the epileptic focus with advanced mapping and monitoring techniques.

Benefits:

  • High success rate
  • Comprehensive evaluation
  • Advanced monitoring
  • Multidisciplinary approach

Best Suited For:

Well-localized epileptic foci, accessible lesions

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)

Implantable device that stimulates the vagus nerve to reduce seizure frequency.

Benefits:

  • Non-destructive
  • Adjustable therapy
  • Gradual improvement
  • Minimal side effects

Best Suited For:

Multiple seizure types, failed resection

Outcome metrics for Epilepsy Surgery

Patient satisfaction

98%

Patients reporting improved quality of life six weeks after care.

Average hospital stay

2.1 days

Measured across routine cases without additional comorbid risk.

Return to work

86%

Patients resuming desk duties within the recommended timeframe.

Metrics are derived from internal audit data (rolling 12 months) and adjusted for case-mix. Individual recovery varies.

Featured Patient Journey

Anterior temporal lobectomy with amygdalohippocampectomy

Seizure-Free After Epilepsy Surgery

“The team prepared me for every step; I have been seizure-free since the operation.”

A.D.

A 27-year-old software engineer with weekly seizures despite triple therapy underwent comprehensive evaluation followed by resection. He is seizure-free and back to work, tapering medication under supervision.

  • ILAE Class I outcome at 9 months
  • No neurocognitive decline on follow-up testing
  • Returned to work in 6 weeks
